Hierarchy view before v3.8.3

Hierarchy view provides a quick view of alignments and key results associated with objectives at all levels.

Click on 'hierarchy view' menu item in 'objectives and KR' section of Employee Success menu.

Alignments and KR

Once alignments are done from alignment section on objective detail page, you can see those alignments in a broader and better way from 'hierarchy view' option. You can see in the image below, "Company Objective 1" is a company level objective which receives contribution from another objective called "Team objective 1" at team level. In turn,  "Team objective 1" is receiving contribution from 2 other objectives at different levels.

You can also check associated KRs of objectives at different levels on 'hierarchy view' page. Employee Success has a filter on 'hierarchy view' page that lets you decide if you want to see KRs of objectives in this view or want to hide them. For eg. If you have overall 100+ KRs in the system, then it becomes difficult to toggle between KRs and alignments, that is the reason we have given an option to filter this view. Once filtered, the system will remember that selection and when you come back 'hierarchy view' page next time you will see the same filtered view on 'hierarchy view' page.

What type of filters can be applied for objectives on hierarchy view page

You can filter objectives using different filters like filter by Status, filter by particular objective, filter by showing or hiding ker results. Let us see all of these options one by one in detail.

Filter according to objective statuses

You can use the 'filter' option to filter top company objectives as per different  statuses of objectives. Just click on filter option and check on different statuses from the drop-down and you will see all the objectives are reflected according to the objective statuses you have selected.

The reason why this filter only applies to the 'top company objectives' is - if we apply the same filter at all levels, it may end up hiding OKRs that do not match the filter. They are hidden just because at least one of the objectives in their hierarchy matches the status filters.

View alignments only for a particular objective

When you want to check the progress of a particular objective and it's alignments, Click on 'search objective' option and select the objective you want and then check alignments and KRs associated with the selected objective.

Once selected you will be able to see alignments and associated KRs (If show key results option is checked).

Show or hide key results

Over the time, when you will have thousands of objectives in the system, the number of KRs will go up almost by three-five times of a number of objectives. In such case, hierarchy view becomes a bit difficult to handle and search for the exact alignment you want. That is why we have this option of 'show key results' with a checkbox. When checked you will be able to see all KRs associated with all objectives or selected objectives visible according to the filters you have applied with objective alignments. When unchecked it will only show objective allignments of all objectives or selected objectives visible according to applied filters.

First highlighted part shows KRs of selected objective called 'Company Objective 1' and second highlighted part shows it's objective alignments.

How to add new alignments from hierarchy view page

You can also create/add new alignment of objective from hierarchy view page itself. Just hover over the bottom right corner of the objective you want to add create an alignment with and you will see a '+ Icon'. Click on that '+ Icon' and create new alignment from the given popup same as you create one from objective detail page.

On hierarchy view page, you can only create alignments to 'receive contribution from' other objectives. For 'contributing to' alignments you need to navigate to that particular objective detail page and create an alignment from there.

How to identify alignments & KRs

This is but obvious when you have a lot of alignments & KRs you need to understand how to identify or differentiate these attributes of alignments. Employee Success makes it very simple for you by giving different symbols for it. You might have noticed on objectives & KR page that every objective level is differentiated with a special symbol that shows the first letter of OKR Level, Eg. I for Individual. objective detail page when you have multiple KRs added in an objective, those are defined with specific symbols.

Objectives

In this way, 'I' sign is for 'individual level objectives', 'T' sign is for 'team level objectives' & 'C' sign is for 'company level objectives'. With the help of these signs/symbols, you can identify which level of objective is aligned with the other objective.

Key results

Starting from the first key result in below image, 'key icon' is for metric type key results, 'check box icon' is for to do type key results, 'check box highlighted in blue Icon' is for Jira Issue type key results and the last one is again for Jira Issue type (When added a Jira Epic as Key Result) key results. These all same symbols/Icons will get displayed for objective alignments and key results associated with all objectives.
